I have worked with couples, families, children and related issues for 35 years. My therapeutic interventions focus on resolutions that provide relief as soon as possible. Ground rules for safety and respect are a standard part of therapy.
Therapeutic interventions are solution-focused with success being measured at every session against the goals set by each client. Therapeutic techniques vary with individual needs and abilities.
Homework extends the benefit through the week and patients are encouraged to take responsibility for their own well-being. Typically, relationships begin to feel relief in a few weeks and within 8 to 12 sessions have regained long-term stability.
While there should be some fairly immediate relief, research suggests that it takes 16 to 24 sessions to create a system that is stable enough to resist relapse. While weekly sessions are typical in the beginning, as soon as things stabilize couples may wish to start alternative weeks and then build in some longer periods between sessions. Most couples find 'tune-ups' helpful from time to time after the conclusion of initial treatment.
